FISHER (NZ) – KINTSUGI FOR ORCHESTRA
BEETHOVEN – TRIPLE CONCERTO C MAJOR
BEETHOVEN – SYMPHONY NO.6 ‘PASTORALE’
The program opens with Salina Fisher’s Kintsugi for Orchestra, a stunning work inspired by the Japanese art of mending with gold, symbolizing resilience through vulnerability and the beauty of imperfection. Originally written for the NZTrio, Kintsugi was commissioned for orchestra and premiered by the MSO in 2022, and is now celebrated around the globe.
Next, the renowned NZTrio joins us on stage to perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, a masterpiece of collaboration between piano, violin, cello, and orchestra, blending Viennese elegance with dynamic interplay.
The concert culminates in Beethoven’s beloved Pastorale Symphony No. 6, a timeless tribute to the countryside, capturing the tranquility, joy, and calm of nature alongside its raw power. A nature lover himself, Beethoven spent many hours walking in the country, and his symphony reflects the shepherd’s pipe, birdsong, flowing streams, and even a dramatic thunderstorm with vivid beauty.

NZTrio’s long-held desire to collaborate with celebrated soprano Emma Pearson in a performance of Strauss’ beloved Vier letzte Lieder has led us to commission our compatriot Salina Fisher to arrange these mighty pieces for trio and voice. In this concert, Four Last Songs, we present that hero-piece nestled within a fascinating and varied collection, dialoguing works for trio with and without soprano.
In the first half of the programme, we fall into the ghostly embrace of Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin’s The spirit and the maiden, before Fisher’s Kintsugi contemplates the process of thorough and painstaking repair leading to far greater strength and beauty than before. Two songs, A Mirage & Stella Viatoris, are a treat from American composer Amy Beach, before we bask in the lush melancholy of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, preparing us for Salina Fisher’s poignant arrangements of Strauss’ final works.
With the support of a generous patron, NZTrio has commissioned New Zealand composer Salina Fisher to write arrangements of Strauss’ beloved Vier letzte Lieder for piano trio, and presents these iconic works with celebrated soprano Emma Pearson.

Hypnotique presents a diverse array of works that challenges expectations of traditional chamber music. A whirlwind of motion typifies NZ composer Lyell Cresswell’s virtuosic Moto Perpetuo, ahead of the percussive and electronic influences in Le Boeuf’s jazz-adjacent Obliquely Wrecked. Fauré’s Piano Trio in D minor exhibits lyrical elegance, with transportative, lush harmonic textures, and Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin pays homage to Haydn, blending classical and contemporary styles in Calliope Dreaming. Then finally, the full Romantic immersion of Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht is structured around the five stanzas of a poem; deeply transcendent and utterly beautiful.

The Programme
Lyell Cresswell (NZ) Moto perpetuo
Pascal Le Boeuf Obliquely Wrecked
Gabriel Fauré Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120
Elena Kats-Chernin Calliope Dreaming
