Ethel Smyth is another great composer and suffrage

Ethel Smyth is another great composer and suffragette on whose shoulders we proudly stand (see previous composer series posts for Untamed Hope). Considered one of Britain’s most important composers, she was a passionate campaigner for votes for women, arguing that the disadvantages women faced in music stemmed from their lack of political voice. She wrote the suffragette anthem 'The March of the Women' and is credited with teaching the corps of women (including her friend Emmeline Pankhurst) how to throw rocks: imprisoned in Holloway for just that, throwing a rock through the windows of the Houses of Parliament in 1912. Thomas Beecham described her leaning through the bars, conducting the chorus of women marching and singing outside with a toothbrush. She was a child prodigy from a typical wealthy Victorian family and consistently defied her father’s wishes (a major general in the Royal Artillery who forbade her to study music). She taught herself, and announced at age 17 that she was going to study in Leipzig. A major battle ensued. She won on the condition that she must complete her courses or return. But she disobeyed and after only one year, she chose to quit Reinecke and study privately with the Herzogenbergs (where she wrote this trio aged 21). Through them, she met all the major composers of the day: Brahms, Dvořák, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Clara Schumann - described as a ‘jolly and amusing young Englishwoman who rides, hunts, fishes, swims, jumps over chairs, and has been writing some quite charming little songs’. She went on to make her name throughout Germany with these charming little songs.
