May 2016 High Notes Newsletter

1ebc5fa4-143e-403f-8aa4-aceedfc3eeba

Every month is NZ Music Month for us. But in May we get to celebrate with you all, so Happy NZ Music Month everyone!

It was fantastic to see so many of you “White Nighters” at our Auckland Art Gallery concerts in March and we loved getting down country to celebrate the opening of the brand new Marlborough Civic Theatre in Blenheim. Thanks to Mary Gow and the Mulled Wine Series for allowing us to share a gorgeous programme with the lovely people in Paekakariki. Thanks also to Diocesan School for Girls for getting stuck in to our NZTrio Live! project. We hope to bring NZTrio Live! to schools all around the country. Look out Sacred Heart and Pinehurst – you’re next.

LOFT SERIES 2016:

As you know, our Loft Series is now on sale. We’ve called the three concerts ZOOM, GLOW and FLARE and each one has a matching photo utilising that photographic effect, taken by our uber-talented photographer Kristian Frires.

ZOOM, GLOW, FLARE

In this year’s Loft Series we’ve introduced a repeat performance of each Sunday concert on the Tuesday following. We’ve got a mouth-watering line up of music to share with you, including collaborations with Chinese guzheng ace Xia Jing and New Zealand’s own opera megastar Simon O’Neill. ZOOM kicks off on June 12 and 14. Click here for all the details.

Don’t worry Wellington folks, on June 16 you get the chance to experience ZOOM at the City Gallery. See our Upcoming Performances page for more info.

OUR NEW WEBSITE:

You’ll see that those Loft series photos also feature on our brand new website. It’s the same ol’ address, nztrio.com and you’ll find a new look and lots of new features. There’s plenty to hear, read, watch and see so have a poke around. We invite you, our NZ3 family, to let us know what you think – your feedback is important to us.

COMPOSER CORNER: CHRIS WATSON

6bb7288f-47ec-4efe-85c8-fc5cf2284d1aYou’ll know Chris Watson as an established NZ composer but you may not know that he’s also the man behind the camera in our SOUNZ videos (see LOOK & LISTEN).

We’ve played his piece Schemata – Three Views of an Imaginary Object before – in Turkey of all places – and we thought it was high time New Zealand audiences heard it too, so we’re featuring it in our concert ZOOM, which you can catch in June in Auckland and Wellington. Find out more about Chris Watson here and visit our Upcoming Performances page for more info.

NEW SUBSCRIBER CD WINNER:

ab571619-1c35-4be1-a92c-4f249043ea01Our lucky CD winner is Anne McGrath from Upper Hutt. Congratulations, Anne. We’ll be in touch to find out which of our CDs you don’t already have!

57b9652a-877b-4aeb-a7ce-e216afd03279Just before we sign off, we are keen to make sure you all know about The Insider – a new personal invite list that’ll bring you the best shows, events, and a special offer or two. If you haven’t signed up yet, we encourage you to give it a go – just click the button to the left. You’ll find a range of current and upcoming arts events to consider in one easy place. Click here for more info.

That’s all for High Notes this time. We hope to see you at a concert soon.

Chelsea Jade - Superfan

Chelsea is a unique and supremely talented singer-songwriter with impressive producer chops to boot. Her finely-honed humour, super-catchy riffs and deeply affecting lyrics combine with her delightfully quirky presentation in a powerful body of work. This track, her latest release, is a perfect, sharply-bemusing example.

Ross Harris - There May Be Light

Ross Harris is a hugely prolific composer who utilises a complex technique to achieve works of profound beauty and gravitas. He first wrote for us in 2006, a work called senryu. For a 2014 NZTrio tour with UK clarinet wunderkind Julian Bliss (that included the incomparable Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time) Chamber Music New Zealand and NZTrio joined forces and commissioned Ross to write a companion piece for the same forces. This video is an interview and performance combined.

Ladi6 - Walk Right Up

Ladi’s Samoan heritage shines through in her beaming smile, rich mellow voice and Pacific-reggae riffs. She and her partner Parks sink into just the right groove in their urban hiphop tracks. These artists have been hit by Covid-19 harder than most, with major tours getting cancelled. They deserve your support. Check out MusicHelps.org for help thinking of ways to show your support for these and other treasured kiwi artists. ♥️
